If you’ve been wondering what’s been happening around here, let me give you a Zone 9A August garden update. It’s hot with most days being over 100 degrees and very little rain. The gophers have stolen four tomato plants and one bell pepper plant. However, there are still some things growing!

Spaghetti Squash Growing

The personal size spaghetti squash plant is coming right along. Each squash weighs about 1.5 pounds so it’s the perfect serving size for two people. I also planted some honey bear acorn squash and those plants are coming along nicely; we have 2 tiny squash growing on the first plant. I planted two more acorn squash plants last week, so those will be coming along soon too.

After a final harvest of all of the cherry tomatoes August 1st, I removed all of the tomato plants I planted this past spring. I’m prepping that bed for fall planting in late September or early October. I cannot wait to plant lettuce, carrots, and swiss chard.

Okra Growing

The okra plants from this spring are still producing! They are the most resilient and prolific plants I have ever grown. This is my first year growing okra and if you are in a hot climate I could not recommend it more. I am growing the Clemson Spineless variety.

Also in September, it will be time to plant chrysanthemums for fall decor. I love the big mums potted on the front porch with an arrangement of pumpkins. This girl is ready for fall!
