Planning and ordering seeds for my garden is much simpler now that I have learned how to store and organize seed packets. My previous storage method had several different shipping boxes and envelopes stuffed with seed packets. There was not an order to the madness and it added an unnecessary level of frustration to gardening.

There are lots different methods to seed organization, such as:

  • Photo Albums
  • Shoe Organizers
  • Recipe Tins
  • Large Clear Jars
  • Actual Seed Storage Tins
  • Photo Storage Boxes

My Seed Storage Method

I chose to go the photo storage box route and ordered this 4″ X 6″ photo storage case from Amazon. It’s a clear case with a locking handle; inside there are 16 individual 4″ X 6″ boxes that are perfect for seed storage. I organized my seed packets by type, but you could also organize by planting month if desired.

How to Store and Organize Seed Packets

I grouped my seeds by type; the ones I only had one packet of such as artichoke and sorrel when in the miscellaneous box.

When you store and organize you seed packets, it makes seed ordering much easier and it also allows you to see what you have. I determined I do not need to order any additional tomato or lettuce seeds this year, but I did put in an order for more varieties of sweet peppers.

Seed Storage Tips

Seeds are best stored in a cool, dry place. I keep my box in our storage closet in our home; a constant temperature helps to seeds to retain their vitality. If kept correctly, seeds can keep for many years; there’s a story of successful seed germination using seeds that were 32,000 years old that were encased in ice. Obviously, the freezer works well for seed storage and my grandparents used to store their seeds in the freezer in coffee cans. I have not used my freezer to store seeds…yet.

Gardening is so much more efficient when everything has a place and I love that I can easily find my seeds now.
