We have been home more these days and can take the time to make sandwich bread from scratch. My milk and honey homemade sandwich bread uses only six simple ingredients out of my pantry. This bread is great to use for a turkey sandwich, Texas toast for breakfast with your favorite jelly or a gooey grilled cheese sandwich. The honey adds a touch of all natural sweetener.

Milk & Honey Homemade Sandwich Bread

Any bread flour will work, but this time I have a package of Bob’s Red Mill Artisan Bread Flour in my pantry. This bread can be made in the oven, however, I prefer the ease of using my bread machine to do all the work so I’m hands off to work on other projects.

Milk and Honey Homemade Bread Ingredients

Add the ingredients for the milk and honey homemade sandwich bread to your bread machine according to the manufacturer’s directions; it will handle the mixing, rising, kneading and baking for you. You’ll have the scent of homemade bread wafting through your home in just a few hours. Try to resist the urge to slice the bread as soon as it’s ready…it is so tempting to dig in! There is nothing better than a slice of homemade bread with butter and honey!

Now, grab your 6 ingredients and make this bread…

Equipment

  • Bread Machine Capable of Making a 2 lb Loaf

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk room temperature
  • 1 tbsp whole milk room temperature
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp butter melted
  • 3 cups bread flour see note below
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast

Instructions

  • Measure out 1 cups plus 1 tablespoon of whole milk. Warm to room temperature (see note below).
Layer your ingredients in your bread machine according to the manufacture's instructions. This is very important and will affect the outcome of your recipe. My bread machine manual instructs to put all of the wet ingredients including the milk, melted butter and honey into the bread pan first, following by the flour and salt. It then instructs to make a small well in the flour for the yeast. It is important for the yeast not to touch the salt, sugar or liquid.
  • Select the basic bread course on your machine. I select the basic cycle with the medium crust. Your bread machine may or may not have a crust setting.
  • When the machine is done, all the bread to sit for 5 minutes. Carefully, remove the bread pan from the machine using oven mitts as it will be hot. Invert the bread pan and gently shake the pan to remove the loaf. Allow the loaf to cool on a wire rack. Wrapped bread can be stored on the counter for up to 4 days.

Notes

When measuring flour, spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level off. This prevents your flour from being densely packed and allows for more accurate measuring.
I warm my milk in the microwave for 20 seconds to remove the chill from the refrigerator and achieve room temperature instantly.
